About Dr. Bernard 'Bernie' Furshpan

Bernie Furshpan is a Holocaust educator, speaker, media producer and the subject of the PBS document

The Weight of Memory: I Am Bernie Furshpan is a PBS-featured Holocaust documentary about memory, education, upstanders, tolerance, and our shared humanity.

Dr. Bernard “Bernie” Furshpan is an educator, speaker, media producer, entrepreneur, and the son of a Holocaust survivor, who has spent his life contemplating a profound question: What do we do with the memory we inherit? As the central figure in the PBS-featured, internationally award-winning documentary, The Weight of Memory: I Am Bernie Furshpan, he shares his family’s story not just to preserve the past, but to inspire people to confront hatred, foster empathy, and find the courage to become upstanders in their communities. Through his efforts in Holocaust education, Bernie emphasizes our shared humanity and the idea that understanding another person’s perspective does not necessitate agreement, but it does call for attentive listening.

In addition to his impactful work, Bernie serves as Vice Chairman of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County and as Executive Producer of hmTv, Humanity Matters, where he facilitates vital discussions about tolerance, history, culture, courage, and human connection for audiences around the globe. His extensive and diverse career includes 27 years as a chiropractor, founding a major marketing agency, producing television and live entertainment, and owning New York City’s iconic Metropolitan Room. Today, he synthesizes those decades of experience as a passionate speaker and advocate for a more humane world, reminding us that the weight of memory is not merely about carrying the past; it's about choosing how we respond to it.

The Weight of Memory: I Am Bernie Furshpan is an internationally recognized documentary following Dr. Bernard "Bernie" Furshpan, the son of Holocaust survivors, as he transforms his family's history into a mission of Holocaust education, tolerance and human dignity.  Directed by Christiane Arbesu, the film follows Bernie as he shares the extraordinary survival story of his father, Moshe Furshpan, while challenging students and audiences to consider a larger question: What responsibility do we have for the memory we inherit?  Featured on PBS, The Weight of Memory is more than a Holocaust documentary. It is a call to confront antisemitism, bigotry, intolerance and dehumanization while inspiring a new generation to become upstanders.  Through education, speaking, filmmaking and conversation, Bernie Furshpan's message is simple: memory must lead to action.

A Global Awakening Rooted in Empathy, Science, and Shared Origins

We are all part of the same human family. Every single person on Earth today is, at minimum, your 15th to 50th cousin. That’s not an opinion; it’s genetics. Science tells us we all descend from the same original mother. As we spread across continents, nature did what it does best: it diversified us.

Nature celebrates variety. Ten million species roam this Earth in every color, shape, and size imaginable, and humanity is no exception. Our skin tones, languages, and customs are beautiful branches from the same ancestral root. We are not separate races; we are one species, one family, in reunion every time we meet. This truth is a crucial part of Holocaust education, illustrating how interconnected we truly are.

And yet, we forget.

Insecurity, envy, and fear of the unfamiliar fuel gossip, bigotry, and eventually, hate. When false leaders seize that fear, they manipulate it. They build mobs, spread disinformation, and turn people against their own cousins. Hatred spreads like cancer—indiscriminately, destructively, inevitably leading to suffering, guilt, and collapse.

We’ve been too quick to conform. Too eager to follow party lines or ideologies without asking questions, even as the weight of memory urges us to remember our shared humanity.

We forget: We are the gatekeepers of our own minds.

What we accept, absorb, and repeat becomes the language of our conscience or the weapon of our undoing.

We must reclaim our moral compass, resist blaming others for our discomforts, and stop justifying hate and violence as a byproduct of allegiance or ideology.

Blind obedience is not a virtue; critical thought is.

But all is not lost.

We can reboot humanity.
